SYNOPSIS:

When beloved pop star Phoenix spontaneously combusts on stage; the CSI�s are brought in to uncover a more sinister cause of death. However, when the deceased is identified as a stand-in the team have a race against time to protect the real Phoenix who may or may not be the next target. Also, a tragic secret from Cardoza�s past is revealed after an awkward run-in with Calleigh.

REVIEW:

A young woman, Phoenix, performs on stage in front of her adoring fans, the atmosphere hits fever pitch as her crescendo builds, and suddenly she bursts into flames transforming the crowd into a terrified mob as she drops dead. The CSI�s quickly arrive on the scene but their progress is severely hindered by the EMT�s who seize the body and transport her to hospital. Horatio follows and forces his way into the building where Tom performs an impromptu autopsy revealing she was already deceased when her body caught ablaze.

Through enactments and interviews the team are able to rule out the pyrotechnics as the cause of fire; however Calleigh identifies her alcohol based skin lotion as being the catalyst to her sudden eruption. The team discuss the hasty removal of the body and express their concerns about their lack of evidence. Meanwhile, Phoenix�s manager Julian meets with Horatio; he informs the frustrated CSI leader that Phoenix had no apparent enemies but fame does bring numerous dangers from random people.

Walter locates a hidden wire on Phoenix�s dress and sends it for testing, where it is revealed as copper, furthermore, Phoenix�s dress designer claims it wasn�t part of the original dress; someone�s tampered with it. Interestingly, Tom states that someone from the crowd may have murdered her via electrocution from a stun gun; utilising the copper wire as a conductor which would explain why her heart stopped before she caught fire. However, the real riddle emerges when Phoenix�s autopsy reveals medical records different to those of Phoebe (Phoenix�s alter ego.)

Julian reluctantly divulges that Phoebe quit months ago, causing him to promote her backup dancer Vanessa into the lead role, using clever make-up techniques and sun glasses to hide her true identity. He admits to sacking the entire staff and isolating Vanessa from the new crew to ensure her identity remained intact; not wanting the truth to emerge for financial reasons. Conversely, Phoebe�s emancipated mother insists she hasn�t seen her daughter in six months, emotionally confessing she lost control when she was her manager and focused heavily on the fame, driving her daughter away. The team realise they must find Phoebe quickly as she may have been the killers true target and, consequently, may be in serious danger.

Following some ing�nues CCTV analysis from recurring character Dave, the team are able to eye a man stealing the bracelet from Vanessa�s hand during her show. The man in question, Bobby, adamantly declares he�s her biggest fan and could never hurt her; he feigns ignorance when asked about a stung gun and claims he took the bracelet because Phoenix owed him money (remember the public thinks Phoebe is dead and not Vanessa.)
Cardoza and Calleigh search one of Phoebe�s known locations for the endangered singer; they find a hidden room in which Phoebe resides, tied to a bed and drugged. Upon freeing her they shockingly conclude that someone had inserted something into her arm, Phoebe remains too drugged to talk. They arrest a doctor who states he was merely paid to drug her by Julian, keeping her out of the public eye whilst Vanessa assumed the Phoenix persona. Following on, Julian admits to false imprisonment but denies murder; he callously claims his actions were dignified as he would�ve lost everything had the truth come out.

The device inserted into Phoebe�s arm is identified as a GPS tracking device, they manage to trace the signal back to her mother. Her mother weeps as she explains the motive behind the GPS; she thought she was losing her daughter and had inserted the device to ensure she could always find her, although lately she thought it had been broken. She also explains that Julian had an injunction imposed against her visiting Phoebe, clearly portraying him as caring more about money than Phoebe.

Walter manages to isolate a serial number present on Vanessa�s bracelet; allowing the team to match it to the offending stun gun. The stun gun is revealed to belong to Bobby, who angrily declares Vanessa didn�t deserve the limelight and wasn�t the true phoenix; however, the episode swerves again as Bobby says �we had to do it� indicating another culprit. Again, another believably innocent character was revealed as the perpetrator as Phoebe�s mother is named by Bobby. She claims Vanessa was a fraud and that she did it for Phoebe, who despairingly retorts that she did it for herself. The final shot we see of Phoebe is her happily singing in a small crowd; something she has longed for since her overwhelming fame.

Aside from the main story we learned a little more about Cardoza; indeed Calleigh interrogates him after a discrepancy about mileage emerges at work. Her car has unrecorded miles on them from the day she loaned it Cardoza, he claims it was a personal errand and quickly loses his temper when she presses it. Yet, later he is apologetic but Calleigh remains defiant he�s hiding something; he finally confesses he was following a woman he believes is in danger as she�s living with a serial killer from L.A. (explaining his relocation.) He explains the killer escaped justice on a technicality after he murdered a woman by slitting her throat �so deep he nearly decapitated her.� Cardoza then sadly tells Calleigh the killer also murdered his wife. This provided a new insight to Cardoza and suggests his confident exterior is hiding a devastating pain drawing sympathy for an already strong character.
