1-1- Characteristics of the Desert
Saying that The Living Desert is in "the desert" is a little like saying an island is in "the ocean." The name of our local desert, Colorado, comes from the Colorado River, which is roughly its eastern boundary. Just north of us here in the Coachella Valley, is the Mojave Desert. The Mojave and Colorado regions are commonly called the "high" and "low" deserts, respectively, even though the Mojave claims Death Valley, the lowest spot in the Western Hemisphere at 282 feet below sea level. Most of the Mojave has an average elevation of 2,000-4,000 feet above sea level, and so is the cooler of the two regions. Average elevation of the Colorado desert is about 1,000 feet.
Like oceans no two deserts are the same, but there are certain things they all have in common:
 Super-dry air
 Little rain....less than 10 inches a year
 High daytime temperatures
 Lots of wind

2-1- World Deserts
The 12 Major Deserts
There are 12 distinct deserts around the world, at least one on every continent except Europe and Antarctica.
All together, they take up about one fifth of the earth's surface.
The deserts of the world tend to form two bands around the globe.
 The Takla Makan-Gobi in China
 The Turkistan in Southern Russia
 India's Thar
 The Iranian, Arabian and Saharan
 The North American Desert
All occur near the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere. Their Southern Hemisphere counterparts are:
 The Kalahari and Namib in Africa
 The Patagonian and Atacama in South America
 The Australian
 All occur along the Tropic of Capricorn.
 Each great desert has many divisions and sub-divisions.
3-1- Plants at The Living Desert
The Living Desert is one of the most successful zoological parks in the country and offers visitors the most complete introduction to the natural desert. The organization is dedicated to preserving not only plant and animal life of deserts from around the world but also educating the public through interpretive exhibits, programs and publications.
Example about the desert plant:
Horseradish Tree
Native originally to the Himalayan foothills of northern India, horseradish tree can be found widely planted throughout the tropical areas of the world. Well known in ancient times, the pleasant-tasting edible oil from this tree was highly valued by the Roman, Greek and Egyptian civilizations. Renewed interest in this plant has been sparked by the desire to find ways to ease nutritional and medicinal deficiencies in impoverished areas of the world from the tropics to the deserts. Recent tests on Moringa oleifera show that it may indeed merit the sobriquet of Miracle Tree.

Ostrich
What does it look like?
A very tall, flightless bird; it stands 7-8 feet. It has a long neck, small head, soft body plumage, long legs ending in large feet with only two toes (unlike other ratites or birds with flat breastbones, which have 3 or 4 toes). The head has a flat beak, large eyes and long eyelashes. Fine bristles (feathers) cover the head and neck and the rest of the body is covered in feathers. Male feathers are black or blackish on the body and white on the wings and tail. Female feathers are a lighter sand color, which helps camouflage her while incubating eggs during the day. An adult ostrich can weigh up to 320 pounds.

In the end I hope to support the library with books about animals to develop and encourage our information.
