The Mausoleum of Yasser Arafat



The tragic passing away of Yasser Arafat on Nov 11, 2004 has shocked all Palestinians in and out of Palestine. Arafat with his koffiah was the national and international symbol of Palestine.

Arafat was the longest chapter in our lives, and was one of the rising Palestinian names from the ashes of the Nakbah ( catastrophe) to the heat of resistance to the idea of the independent Palestinian state.

The Arafat mausoleum, which we took the responsibility to design and construct, is fully financed by the Palestinian people. It includes three main components: the mausoleum, the mosque, and the museum.

The project covers 6500 square meters of land. The mausoleum has a cubic shape with 11 meters from each side, covered with Jerusalem stone fixed to concrete walls using dry mechanical system and stainless steel Z- anchors.


The mausoleum is surrounded by a water area covering 184 square meters.

The mosque , for both men and women, can accommodate up to 250 persons. The Minaret is 28 meters high and can be seen from all over Ramallah. The museum will be constructed at a later stage when all the personal belongings of Yasser Arafat are collected.

A green garden with olive trees brought specially from Jerusalem will be planted in the vicinity of the mausoleum covering 800 square meters.

The Mausoleum is simple , not costly. President Arafat was a simple and stoic man, and if he were living , he would not mind us doing it in this shape
